File Checksum calculates the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hashes of any file, so you can verify a download, compare two copies or record a fingerprint for later. Choose a file and all three digests appear together alongside its name, size and type, each with its own Copy button. The hashes are computed over the file’s raw bytes, so they match command-line tools such as sha256sum, shasum or Get-FileHash. The file is read into memory in your browser rather than uploaded, which keeps private files private; very large files are limited by your device’s available memory.
Choose a file
Press Choose file and pick any file from your device, from ZIPs and installers to photos and PDFs.
Let it calculate
MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 are calculated together. Large files take longer because every byte is read.
Compare or copy
Check the SHA-256 against the published value, or press Copy to save it. Clear resets the tool for the next file.
Find the SHA-256 checksum on the download page, choose the file here and compare the two strings, ignoring letter case. If every character matches, the file is exactly what was published; if not, download it again.
Use SHA-256 whenever the publisher provides it. MD5 and SHA-1 still catch accidental corruption, but both have practical collision attacks, so they cannot prove a file wasn’t deliberately altered.
There is no fixed limit, but the whole file is read into browser memory before hashing. Very large files, such as multi-gigabyte disk images, may be slow or fail, especially on phones.
No. File Checksum gives MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256. Hash Generator offers SHA-512, but for typed or pasted text rather than files.
