Hash Generator creates MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes of any text you type or paste. All four digests are calculated together and update as you type, shown as lowercase hexadecimal with a separate Copy button for each. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before hashing, so the results match command-line tools such as sha256sum for the same input — watch for a trailing newline, which changes the hash. Hashing is one-way: a digest can show that text is unchanged but cannot be turned back into the original. Everything is computed in your browser, so the text is never uploaded.

Type or paste into Text to hash. Load sample fills in example text, and Clear empties the box.
Read the digests
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 appear together as lowercase hex and update with every keystroke.
Copy the one you need
Press Copy next to the algorithm your system expects and paste it where you need it.
Not for security. Practical collision attacks exist for both MD5 and SHA-1, so use SHA-256 or SHA-512 wherever tampering matters. MD5 is still fine as a quick checksum against accidental changes.
No. Hashing is not encryption; it is a one-way function. Short or common inputs can sometimes be found by guessing and comparing, which is why passwords should be stored with a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2 rather than a plain hash.
The input bytes must be identical. A trailing newline, Windows line endings, extra spaces or a different text encoding all produce a completely different digest. Letter case in the hex output doesn’t matter, so compare it case-insensitively.
This tool hashes text. For the checksum of a downloaded file, use File Checksum, which reads the file’s bytes and gives MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256.
